The oils used for the celebration of baptism, confirmation, anointing of the sick and holy orders are traditionally kept in a special place in the church. Our aumbry is made of wood and glass and is affixed to the wall behind the baptismal font.
The three oils kept here: Oil of catechumens, Oil of the sick, and Holy Chrism are reminders of the priestly role of the whole people of God. By virtue of our baptism all of us are empowered to evangelize, care for the sick and call forth gifts of the spirit and diverse ministries. These holy oils are visible reminders of this mission.
The aumbry is also a connection with the wider church. The oils reserved here are blessed by our bishop in the cathedral church and sent to all the Catholic communities of the Worcester diocese. Thus, these oils link us with the universal ("Catholic") church of which we are a part.
Loving God, you infuse your Church with gifts of the Holy Spirit,
and heal, comfort, and sanctify those anointed with oil in your name
May the holy oils kept here confirm our unity in faith and
prayer with our bishop and all the members of your church,
and be effective signs of the love that you pour forth into our hearts.
